Top Ten Singles 2016

Time for a quick round-up of my favourite Hello! Project singles of 2016. So with all the subtlety of Donald Trump meeting an attractive woman let’s dive straight in.

10. Kobushi Factory – Bacchikoi Seishun

Kobushi had a mixed year. Nothing quite hit the heights of their first triple A single and they had that odd release that included kid’s weirdness and a samba but it also had this and it’s a very solid, very typical Kobushi song.

9. Morning Musume ’16 – The Vision

Doo do do. Doo do do. Doo do do dababadabadoo. A gentle, classy and rather beautiful Momusu single. I think they had a very solid year actually. Musically they seem to be going through an experimental stage which is great. They need to keep things fresh.

8. Country Girls – Dou Datte Ii No

Country Girls get the 50’s style stuff. It’s not without it’s charm but it’s also not necessarily my favourite type of music. I still really love this though. Fast paced and a little bit rock’n’roll. Fun!

7. C-ute – Naze Hito wa Arasoun Darou

C-ute had a quite quiet year. Maybe they are preparing for 2018. Excuse me while I cry.  I didn’t get the fuss over Mugen Climax and that whole release sort of passed me by a bit. Shame really as they are easily my favourite group and have been incredibly consistent year after year. Anyway this song was a different style for them and I like that they can be given different types of songs to perform. They always rise to the challenge.

6. Juice=Juice Dream Road ~ Kokoro ga Odoridashiteru

Get out my top ten! What’s going on? So many celebrity deaths, weird election results and now Juice=Juice in my top ten. Into the bunkers now! The world has gone crazy. It’s a damn good song though. My favourite single of theirs since their early days.

5. Kobushi Factory – Osu! Kobushi Tamashii

Kobushi’s second entry. Again it’s a very typical, very solid track in a style I relate to Kobushi very strongly. You could actually say this is the soul of Kobushi. ^^

4. Momusu -Sexy Cat no Enzetsu

One of the best PVs of the year (shut your face) and also a really fun song and yet also something a little different. Always good to keep mixing things up a little.

3. Kobushi Factory – Sakura Night Fever

Kobushi’s third entry. It’s a great song and has a fun PV to match. It’s a little silly, it’s a lot of fun and it’s Kobushi in a nutshell (or in a tree shell). so good!

2. Momusu – Utakata Saturday Night.

The Mummy from the Orient Express is coming for Kanon but there’s still time to dance. Again a fun song. It goes well with Kobushi’s Sakura Night Fever actually. Catchy and upbeat. Idol heaven!

1. C-ute – Jinsei Wa Step

Life is step after step after step and after 12 or so years C-ute will soon be taking their next step. Maimi into acting, Airi into more music (hopefully), Chisato deeper into tv world, Nacky into umm…not too sure and Maimai into some cafe most probably. She’ll be the slightly surly waitress. Meanwhile we’ll be left with dozens of great singles and many great album tracks. This is up there with the best for me. Again it’s a different style to usual but it’s toe-tappingly catchy. See what I did there?

So that’s my top ten. Just missing out were Angerme’s Tsugitsugi Zokuzoku and Country Girl’s Ranrarun ~ Anata ni Muchuu which at least gets the funniest PV award. Really it’s a great one. I love it when there’s a lot of humour and there are so many fun moments. Oh and a mention is deserved for Tsubaki Factory who had Hitorijime released and it didn’t suck. They may look like a bunch of misfits but they have potential there. It’ll be interesting seeing them develop. It’s not always about starting off dazzling. Sometimes it’s about going on a journey with the idols. Tsubaki’s journey is a long one but that’s part of the fun of being an idol fan.

Well that’s probably my last post before Christmas so if you are reading this before the 25th have a good one!

    • Really on another day the top ten could have had some different songs in it. It’s hard to choose. The top 4 though were clear of the rest for me though. I fell in love with Jinsei on first listen. Weirdly it took a while for Utakata to grow on me though but when it did BAM! Oh and Sakura Night Fever was impossible not to love just from seeing the PV for the first time. 🙂
